Best low-price face cream

Am I ready to dive down the rabbit hole that is skincare? Maybe – if I narrow it down to Lidl skincare because it isn’t a deep hole.

Yes, Lidl has skincare and I am going to talk about the Restore moisturizing cream nighttime intensive formula. I have been using this for over 2 years now.

Most of the posts here at Off Brand Better consider a comparable product to the private label or off brand product but skincare can be tricky. The only time I would compare apples to apples is if the private label blatantly is trying to imitate the well known brand such as this:

The off brand is using the packaging and label colors to closely match the competitor thus appeal to the consumer more.

What is skincare, anyway?

Skin care in its most basic definition is how you take care of your skin. Both what you do and do not do to it. Proactive and reactive behaviors are part of skin care as well as day to day maintenance. Are you treating a sunburn or itching? Reactive. Sunscreen and hydration to prevent cancer and premature wrinkles? Proactive.

While our skin serves a purpose, we don’t all have the same type of skin. We have different sensitivities, pigment, levels of dry and oily, seasonal changes and age. Hormones impact how our skin behaves as well and this doesn’t help that rabbit hole get any less deep.

Dermatologists seem to recommend consistent and simple with intensive treatments like peels as needed. You do you, friends.

Is Lidl skincare any good?

I have never been in love with any moisturizer enough to buy it more than twice. Full disclosure I don’t have difficult skin and I worked in the beauty industry including the manufacturing side. My skin, it’s normal, leaning towards normal to dry with age. Just a tad sensitive but not by much.

I saw the Restore cream in Lidl next to the other two face creams they offer and because I don’t wear makeup often I decided to get the most intense version because it’s winter and I can wear it throughout the day. Something described as a nighttime intensive moisturizer isn’t something I would expect to do well under makeup.

First impression – very good. The scent is very slight and not offensive to me. I know any scent at all can be off putting and other people love a nice scent in their skin care. So there’s that. It feels rich but not greasy. It absorbs quickly and kept my face soft all day after putting it on at 9 am post face wash with skin still damp.

I continued to use it daily for several weeks and still found it to be effective. I am not looking to soften wrinkles or remove sun damage, I just want comfortable soft skin when the heater sometimes runs and not feeling any crinkling when I laugh at something silly the cat just did.

This cream was $3.99 at the time of purchase in 2022 and I like it just a much as $250 creams I have used. I would consider this a good basic face and neck moisturizer for normal to dry skin.
