Gelato lovers, Talenti gelato specifically are you looking to save a buck or two and shift over to the Lidl brand Gelatelli gelato? I do see complaints of Talenti pricing but keep in mind frozen treats like premium ice cream will cost more than regular brands. The quality is usually better to varying degrees as well as the flavorings being natural based versus lab made. In instances like this we pay more for quality vs. volume.

Lidl products in my experience are generally very good making me open to try any and all of their private label products. The Gelatelli gelato is packaged in containers that are nearly identical to Talenti pints and the flavors, while not as expansive as Talenti, the varieties they do offer are comparable to the original Talenti flavors.

Gelatelli has a safety seal so there’s no chance of people licking it

What is gelato anyway?

Gelato is creamy, cold (the Italian word for frozen), and flavorful like ice cream but it has a lower proportion of cream to milk than ice cream does. There are no eggs which can often be in an ice cream base. Gelaterias can be found all over the world with beautiful colorful displays of flavors and the top of the gelato- filled trays are adorned with fruit, nuts, chocolate, and sauces. They are irresistible.

How does Gelatelli gelato compare to Talenti gelato?

The Gelatelli gelato texture is not ideal. It has unpleasant ice crystals, the texture isn’t as silky as Talenti and the flavor is unusual. I tested the southern style pecan flavor. I found the main flavor to be that of milk powder, not malted milk, just milk powder. The pecans are small and mealy and overall it isn’t as flavorful as it could be. The swirl of dulce de leche isn’t flavorful either. Grainy and seemingly just there for show. Flavorwise, I couldn’t tell a bite that had the swirl and the bite without it.

I would spend the extra $2 and get Talenti because Talenti wins by a longshot.

Gelatelli gets my first red dot review. :( Shame because I like most of the other Lidl private label products.
